Note*Juanita Faye Deem PARKERSBURG NEWS AREA MOTHER OF 12 IS QUALIFIED FOR SPECIAL RECOGNITION TODAY
Becoming a substitute mother to her 12 brothers and sisters as a teenager and giving birth to 12 children of her own in 16 years has to qualify Faye Kirk Davis, Route 2, Washington, for special Mother's Day honors. But that's only part of a sometimes sad, often difficult, but always meaningful and rewarding story. Now 69, Mrs. Davis took on the role of motherhood as a teenager when she was the sixth among a family of 13 children at home. She and the older children were responsible for "mothering" the family after their mother died when Faye was 15. They held the family together for several months until school started when their day "farmed out" some of them with relatives. Faye went to Akron to live with an aunt, but didn't like the city and came home the next summer to get married at 16. Having 12 children of her own seemed natural enough, and their full house was a busy, happy home until July 25, 1948, when her husband drowned in the Ohio River at Washington Bottom during a family outing. That was when her oldest child was 16 and two days before her 12th was born. Her 10th child died at the age of six weeks. The accident was on Sunday. she went to the hospital on Monday, gave birth to her last child on Tuesday, went to the funeral Wednesday and came home to put all their lives back together to remain a family. She saw all 11 children graduate from Parkersburg High School. They all have jobs today, and have presented her with 32 grandchildren and 17 g. grandchildren. at Parkersburg, Wood County, WV.
